Book Review: The Soldier and the Swan by Katherine Brooks

Five+ Stars!

I had the pleasure of beta reading the manuscript awhile back and fell in love with Catherine's story. The published book is even better, if that's even possible!

One of the best books I've read this year.

A beautiful story set in San Francisco, during WWII. Vivienne, is a prima ballerina who stepped away from a flourishing dance career to care for her soldier husband, disabled from the war. She returns to ballet by getting the lead role of Odette in Swan Lake. She is challenged by being out of shape from not dancing every day, finding time to care for her husband, dealing with a judgmental mother-in-law, and resisting the allure of the enigmatic brother-in-law.

I'm a huge fan of ballet and the dance scenes were done so well I could picture every movement. A well-written love story full of emotion, tension, and tragedy, with strong characters that jump off the page. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
